Scrappy or Planned?
This project can be as scrappy or planned as you like. The suggested number of fabrics is listed in the yardage chart – but really, use up your scraps! The important thing is the contrast between fabrics within your blocks. Where the blocks meet in the quilt top works itself out. That doesn’t sound too complicated, does it?
The quilts below show you a few options for different colorways and fabric types.
Grunge is a great option for a solid with some personality. I like to mix it up with small prints and, tonals. You can really have some fun with the snowman hats. Plaids, polka dots, stripes…
I used Civil War reproduction fabrics in the cover quilt and lots of homespun plaids for the snowman hats and scarves.

Supplies
- Frosty Friends Pattern
- Fabric (see yardage chart)
- General sewing supplies – scissors, pins, etc.
- Sewing machine with a fresh needle.
- Rotary Cutter with a new blade.
- Cutting mat and acrylic rulers (12-1/2″ square up ruler, long and shorter rulers for cutting fabric pieces)
- Thread for piecing (I use Aurifil 50 weight cotton – the orange spool.)
- Thread for machine embroidery: like #12 wt. Sulky; you can also use regular thread in a matching color)
- Sewing Machine Needles: Piecing – size 80/12; Applique – size 14/90 topstitch.
- Paper Backed Fusible Web for appliqué: 1-1/4 yards of 20 – 24″ wide (like Steam-A-Seam2 Lite)
- Embroidery Floss, #8 perle cotton, or Baby Rick Rack (3 yds) for snowmen arms.
- Optional ~ Buttons: 8 – 1/4″ (9mm) for eyes and 8 – 1/2″ (12mm) for snowman body, 8 – 1″ carrot nose buttons
